Shakey's Pizza Baseball Hall of Fame set. This recently acquired set is in Excellent-Plus/Near-Mint or better condition; a very nice set which is difficult to piece together! The 160-card Shakey's Pizza. Baseball's Hall of Fame.
Set, generally referenced by the name of its first series, although the set was issued in four series over a 2-year period by the Washington State Sports Collectors Association (WSSCA) in cooperation with Shakey's Pizza restaurants. From 1976 to 1977, five Seattle-area Shakey's Pizza restaurants partially underwrote the production and redemption of a large 160 card set which pictured (to that date) every member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame.Originally, 2,000 prints of each card were produced but due to an accounting error (as well as normal attrition) it is estimated that fewer than 1,500 of each survive today. And complete sets, due to the perceived value in marketing single cards, are exceedingly difficult to find.
Each card features a red, white and blue color scheme (front side) with black and white photograph. The backs are in red and black on white, and the cards are approximately standard 2-1/2" by 3-1/2" size. In an unusual move, the cards were issued skip-numbered in four series: Baseball's Hall of Fame (series 1), Baseball's Greatest Players (series 2), Baseball's Immortals (series 3), and Baseball's All-Time Greats (series 4). The cards are numbered in order of induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame i. Ty Cobb #1, Babe Ruth #2, etc.
Three variations exist: Earl Averill, Sam Thompson and Robin Roberts, as follows. Sam Thompson (#146) was originally included in Baseball's Hall of Fame series but was re-issued in the second series (Baseball's Greatest Players) to correct a factual error.
Robin Roberts (cards #158 and 157) were issued in series one and two (as Thompson) to correct a numbering error. These cards, particularly those of Thompson and Roberts, are relatively unknown and both variations are usually not included in complete sets. The Averill "A" card is the scarcest of all since hundreds were distributed at the 1976 Washington State Sports Collectors Association convention - many to relative non-collectors who redeemed them for a pizza discount.
This set , however , does include. If the cost proves a bit higher than estimate, we will bear the difference.ALL 160 cards are shown. All 160 cards are shown in numerical order, starting with Ty Cobb (card #1), first player elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, then #2 (Babe Ruth), #3, #4, etc. The last scan will show the scarce Earl Averill "A" card following examples of the four different series backs, titled. Check the high-resolution scans; this is only the 6th complete set we've had in stock in nearly two years.
