1921 W551 - Dave Bancroft, New York Giants, Hall of Fame - SGC Authentic. Bancroft was a member of the Giants' championship teams in 1921 and 1922, and he contributed to the National League pennant-winning teams of 1915 and 1923.
Due in part to his outstanding defensive skills and intelligent playing style, Bancroft was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1971. On the Set - Around one hundred years ago, retailers such as grocery or candy stores had baseball cards available in strips available for sale, or to give away to customers.
As these "strip" cards often came in long strips where merchants would cut or rip off cards, rough or uneven edges, and inconsistent card sizes were the norm. Most strip cards grade as authentic only, due primarily to card size or condition issues. Strip cards are classified in the American Card Catalog as W-Cards. The 1921 W551 card set consists of 40 different unnumbered "multi-sport" cards, with 10 cards featuring baseball players; Frank Baker, Dave Bancroft (the card for sale), Jess Barnes, Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Wally Pipp, Babe Ruth, George Sisler, Tris Speaker, and Casey Stengel. Each card measures approximately 1-3/8" x 3-1/4".
The player's name and team name are printed in the bottom margin in black ink, and the backs are blank. Beware of W551 Counterfeits - Over 40 years ago, Fritsch cards produced reprint baseball card sets, including the W551 set. These cards were meant to be just novelty items, and later cards were stamped reprint on the card backs. Unfortunately, the reprint quality was so good many collectors have been fooled into believing the reprints were legitimate cards.
Specifically regarding the W551 set, Fritsch used blue text in the player and team name to distinguish from the original black text.
